Police hail ‘great start’ to Chistmas drink drive campaign

09.12.10 The first week of Gloucestershire’s annual Christmas drink drive campaign has led to 10 arrests, but the figures are significantly lower than the opening week of the 2009 campaign, which saw 18 arrests.

The campaign, in conjunction with the Road Safety Partnership, began on Wednesday December 1, and between that date and the end of Tuesday December 7, seven men and three women were arrested either for drink driving or being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

Inspector Keith Fagan, of Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Road Safety and Traffic Management Department, said: “These figures are close to fifty percent down on the first week of last year’s campaign, which is extremely encouraging.

“It’s too early to say what results the initiative as a whole will yield. But it is clear that in general Gloucestershire motorists know drinking and driving don’t mix.”
