01.12.10 The annual drink and drug drive campaign commences in Gloucestershire today, and the Road Safety Partnership is urging people to adopt a personal ‘zero limit’ if they are planning to drive.
In a similar campaign last Christmas, every 20 minutes, night and day, a motorist was breath tested in Gloucestershire. 2447 tests were carried out, with 70 people arrested. This showed a reduction in the number arrested in the previous year, and we are hopeful for a further reduction this year.
Radio advertisements will outline the personal consequences of being caught, and a campaign website, www.whyriskit.org.uk, will give simple advice to stay safe.
Cabinet Member for Environment, Stan Waddington said, “Alcohol takes longer to leave the body than some people believe. So remember, if you are driving the morning after a night’s drinking, you must leave at least one hour for every unit.
“Any amount of drink – or other substances – will impair you, so please have a zero limit and don’t ruin Christmas.”
