Drink & Drug Drive: Statistics

National drinking and driving statistics:

  • Provisional estimates for 2014 show that between 240 and 340 people were killed in accidents in Great Britain where at least one driver was over the drink drive limit.
  • Around 14 per cent of all deaths in reported road traffic accidents involved at least one driver over the limit.
  • The number of seriously injured casualties in drink drive accidents decreased by 8 per cent from 1,200 in 2012 to 1,100 in 2013.Provisional 2014 drink drive deaths_Edited
  • The total number of casualties of all types in drink drive accidents for 2013 was 8,270, down 17
    per cent on the 2012 figure.
  • In 2013/14, 5.9 per cent of drivers admitted to driving when they thought that they might have been over the drink drive limit.
  • In 2013/14, 0.7 per cent of drivers admitted to driving when they thought that they might be under the influence of illegal drugs.
